How To Remove Two-factor Authentication From A Discord Login

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is an excellent extra security measure that it increasingly being used across the internet. It's fairly secure, easy to use and adds an extra layer of security to website logins. Discord uses it with good effect but if you want to remove two-factor authentication from your Discord login, this tutorial will show you how.

Remove two-factor authentication from Discord

Adding and removing 2FA from Discord is now easier than ever. It has been taken from a background process you had to dig around your account settings for to being front and center.

Open the Discord app and log in.
Select the gear icon by your username on the front page.
Select My Account from the left menu.
Select Remove 2FA from the right pane.
Confirm your choice.

From now on, you will no longer need to put the code into Discord to log into your account. It will be less secure but it will be faster to log in.

Remove two-factor authentication from a Discord server

If you're a server owner and have 2FA enabled on your server, you will need to disable it there too. These two are completely separate so if you don't run a server and only have 2FA enabled on your Discord client, you won't need to do this.

Log into Discord and log into your server.
Select Server Settings and then the Moderator tab.
Select Remove 2FA Requirement from the right pane.
Enter a code to verify and confirm your choice.

Now neither you nor your admins will be required to verify any server changes you make once logged in.

Enable two-factor authentication in Discord

Should you want to enable two-factor authentication again, you can do so in the same way you set it up initially. You need an authentication app from Authy or Google Authenticator. Install one of these on your phone before you begin.

Open the Discord app and log in.
Select the gear icon by your username on the front page.
Select My Account from the left menu.
Select Enable 2FA from the right pane.
Scan the QR code in the popup box or type in the code.
Have the app generate a code and enter that into the Discord box.
Hit Activate once done.

Now you have two-factor authentication set up and will need to generate a login code whenever you sign out of Discord. It's an extra step to get into the app but it's an important step in securing your account.

How two-factor authentication works

Two-factor authentication is becoming increasingly popular on the web with more accounts and web services implementing the technology all the time. But how does it work? The premise is very straightforward but the implementation is a lot more involved.

The platform links your account to a 2FA service and adds a mandatory extra step to the login server. That step is synced with the authentication service and will know what code that service will provide at any given time. The service, using a completely separate process will deliver a one-time passcode (OTP) via text message or within an app. You enter the code and if it matches what the server expects, you're in.

Until 2FA came along, we relied on passwords and we all know how secure they are. With 2FA, you still use a strong password as your first level of defense but can also use the 2FA code as a second layer.

Unless a hacker has infiltrated the login or authentication server, they will have no idea of what code to expect. Their only other way to know would be to have access to your phone. Both ways are in credibly difficult for anyone but the most dedicated hacker to penetrate, which is why it works so well.

Two-factor authentication is not perfect and it is not hackproof as there is no such thing. Of all the security measures available, this is the simplest and easiest for users to live with. We all have phones and we keep them with us wherever we go. That's why most services use SMS or apps to provide the codes. Keep your phone safe, keep your accounts safe, it's as simple as that!
