Does anyone know if Vicky's in Milton has a website? Vicky's is a party/cake/candy supply store.

This is really stretching my luck but... does anyone know if there is a store around Charleston that sells Satin Ice or Pettinice fondant for cakes (anything but Wilton's - love to work with it but hate the taste).

chucklin here- the only fondant I've ever tasted was wilton, and I presumed it all tasted like erasers. hahhahaaa I havent worked with it too much, but I never knew I had options.
I found recipes for homegrown if you'd like to give it a try.
Fondant 101, Making Marshmallow Fondant, Cake Decorating
Fondant Recipe

mail order pettinice fondant catalogy here... info@pettinice.com a ten lb pail of it is $105 on amazon! ack!
2 lb pail of satin ice looks more economical Amazon.com: Premium Rolled Fondant, Black Vanilla Flavor, 2 Lb By Satin Ice: Kitchen & Dining

I saw that article about the price of st albans bakery ingredients going up (they use boxes of dry fondant mix) and here's a distributor I found with a product I never knew about- alpine hi ratio shortening.
Cake Icing and Dessert Fillings that are ready to use makes baking easy. We also have hard to find baking and candy making Supplies and Ingredients.

Oh in case you missed that article
The Charleston Gazette - Business - Pinch of flour*

It defies all logic-- i cannot manage a decent meatloaf & have transformed a ham into a cinderblock, but when it comes to sugary things I look like a phenom because I can temper chocolate like a pro. Weird, huh?

It looks like Harborlady gave you a pretty good article with places that might suit your needs. Here's the contact info for Vicky's just incase though as they don't seem to have a website:
Vicky's
(304) 743-3972
290 E Main St, #C, Milton, WV 25541

Here's a website to another place that you might find what you are looking for: http://www.francoispastryshop.com/index.html (broken link) Francios has some wonderful cakes and pastries and I highly recommend them. Hope this helps.

Harborlady, thanks for the info. Had not seen these websites. Did find a very popular receipe for marshmellow fondant by bunnywoman at Wiltons.com and some others at CakeCentral.com that looked good (one is chocolate).

Fondant is so much fun - it's like an adult version of playing with play dough.

Wiltons is soooo easy to work with but tastes soooo bland and yucky. I hadn't made a cake in over 20 years (and even then not many and they were pretty gross). Saw fondant at Micheals and decided it looked like fun. So have been doing the fondant thing for about 3 weeks. Everyone laughs cuz now I take fondant cakes everywhere I go (surprising the cakes taste very good, fondant tastes bad, my decorating skills - well, not terrible and they will improve).

Made bunnywoman's fondant and it is yummy, easy to make, and easy to work with. The problem is for my next project I want to use candy molds and the marshmellow fondant doesn't work quite as well as Wiltons. Read on Wiltons.com that the Satin and the other taste pretty good so I am on a quest for it. May have to order it online.

Tbailey, thanks for the info. Will call Vicky's in AM before driving down there. The bakery you suggested looks yummy.

vec its odd that I couldn't find anything in charleston-- maybe its a sign you should go into biz??? hehehee
When I had cable and watched tv, loved that show ace of cakes on food network. great to see kids making a living at what they love doing, and they're so creative!

tbail looks like most of these bakeries/specialty shops are in st albans or huntington.

I need to find coconut finely chopped for making Easter eggs. I don't remember what it is called. When Vicky's was in Beckley, WV I bought it regular. Can anyone tell me what it is called and where to fine it. Thanks
